About This Chapter
Tsukushi and the other members of the school's soccer team are at the beach, preparing for the upcoming high school tournament. They've been there since the morning, and they're planning to practice their "hellish dashing drills" before the tournament starts. They tease the kid about his grandpa, who's in "critical condition" and won't be able to participate in the tournament because he's staying in "ooita prefecture" . The kid says he doesn't care what his grandpa thinks of him, but he does want to know why he cares so much about his grandfather. He's a "crochety old man" , the kid says, and he used to be a train engineer back when steam-powered trains ran on the steam system. The guy used to ask the kid what he wanted to do when the sun was up, and the kid would say, "play psx . . the next night . as the sun sets, do you want to play with your grandpa?" The kid asks the guy if he has any regrets about his life, but the guy says, "yeah, I still have stuff to do." The kid realizes that he and his grandpa have the same blood flowing through their veins, and that they've cast off the "shell" of their old lives. The coach asks the kid if his grandpa is okay, and if he means to be cocky lately. The boy says he swears that his grandpa was telling him to live like a kid, not a man.
