In this short scene, the young ling tries to convince the emperor that she is worthy of the position of consort, but the emperor dismisses her as a "hypocritical woman" who is "greedy, lustful for power, and ambitious" . The emperor then tells her that he will treat her better if she agrees to be his consort. He says that he was planning to give her a surprise a few days before he arrived in China, but that he just condemned the emperor for making a joke out of it. He also says that the emperor didn't only punish her, but also promoted her to the status of consort in the future. The ling says that she can compromise with the emperor to seek a marriage alliance with him. She says that it is better to "shut up" , as long as she is alive, than to compromise with "the human race"
