In this chapter, we are introduced to a new character, the "earth demon," who appears in the form of a flying insect. This new character is introduced in order to introduce the audience to the concept of the "miasma" , which is a bodily sensation that is experienced by humans when they feel the presence of things beyond their control. We are told that the earth demon has come to kill everyone in the castle.
