In this chapter, the reader is introduced to Jean-Luce's mother, Mariane. Mariane fell in love with a man named Lucifer, but he disappeared after a few days. When Mariane found herself pregnant, the hospital was unable to perform the Caesarean section, so she gave birth to a girl, named Jean-Etienne. The reader learns that the reason for the girl's birth was to test the strength of a "natural super capable man" . The man, Edward Ward, was the man who conceived the girl, but after observing the girl for ten years, Edward decided that the girl was not strong enough to maintain her body in a three-dimensional world
