This chapter's epigraph comes from the opening lines of the novel, "You won't be this cave alive" . It's a reference to the fact that the ice-blue demon is not an enemy, but rather a member of the Emerald Family. The Emerald Family captured sheng-qingchi as one of their own, but he was only able to do so because he was "unqualified" to be one of the "empiricals" , which is a term used to refer to those who have attained the highest level of the underworld. This means that he was able to protect the mountain from the "ice-blue" demon, but that he didn't have the power to protect it from the other Emerald Family members, who were waiting for their deaths.
