In this chapter, we learn that Dr. Manette's "miasma" is hard to see because he's hiding it under his skin. He's a calm guy, he says, but if it were to change to another person, he'd want to know what's wrong with it. He asks if he'll get revenge for the death of the girl, and if you're going to do it, he wants to know why you didn't charge him for the case. He also asks if there's something wrong with the kid's lost eye, and he asks if you want to see what he has to do to get revenge on her. He says, "I'm longing, I'm looking for revenge, and I'd like you to give me a try." He asks what he can do to make you give it a go. He tells him that he needs ginseng to regain his strength, and when he hears a "crunch crunch" sound, he realizes he needs to bring it with him everywhere. He doesn't know why he needs it, but it's not a good sign. He wonders if she misunderstood what he was trying to say, and wonders if he was just trying to pretend to be weak all the time. It's weird, he tells us, because normal people don't lose consciousness or freak out when they see that something is wrong with them. He adds that he hasn't seen her look so panicked before, and that she's in trouble.
