The next morning, Ming-liang and his wife, Madame Maggie, arrive on the island. They are greeted by Madame Guinevere, who tells them that the island is now home to more than 500 people. She also tells them the story of how her husband, shaobin, and his late wife came to the island, and how many people have now come to visit them. Madame Guillotine, however, refuses to join them, saying that she is too busy on her own to travel with them.
