In this chapter, the narrator tries to find out the source of Shu Ming's debt. He realizes that Shu Ming has borrowed money and put up his pictures as collateral. He also realizes that the girl has jumped from the roof of the school. Shu Ming asks the narrator not to tell the girl about the "miasma" . The narrator tells Shu Ming that he can guess what is going on from the girl's panicked face. He tells the girl to stay away from him and to enjoy her life. He asks if the police came to his class. No, he says, he thinks the girl is playing the game of "scarecrow." He also hears that the police have come to talk to "yin jun." The narrator says that he wants to tail the girl and find out who the real Shu Ming is. He wants to know how she is going to repay the debt.
