The pitter and the schooleus screech at each other as they approach the barrier between the tower and the sea. The barrier is strong, the pitter says, but the barrier is already there. The schooleus asks the patter if he is courting death, and the patter replies that he can kill all of them by himself. The patter asks if there are any other enemies, and he replies that they must protect the master's arrival from any interference. He then asks if the bloodstain on the wall is from a demon. The bloodstain is "prous blood" , which is the blood of an evil spirit. He asks if he can sing to it, and it turns out to be a soliloquy on the nature of sin.
