He tells her that he knows she cares about the girl, but he doesn't want everyone to know about it. He reminds her that she is not a threat to him, and that he will protect her now as well as he did when they were young. He compares the two of them, saying that he looked like a "coward" when he tried to protect the girl. He asks her to shelter him from the dangers of the world, and she responds by saying that she will get herself in danger. He says that he has been secretly improving his power, and he asks her if she can help him. She says that she can, but Desdemonas will not fight back because he has not fought back
