The scene opens in the "under ground room" , where Hirokazu is hiding out. He tells the audience that he has been hiding something from them all along, because he wants to make them feel worse about their mother's death than about the fact that she is alive. He says that his mother was used, and died, so that her mother could become sukeyo uchi . He asks the audience to imagine what it must be like to be a mother who is used and dies, and he says that he will kill himself if he has to.
