In this short scene, the audience is introduced to the characters of King Lear and Queen Maccabees. The audience is told that King Lear's mother, Kishio Fuchi, used the power of the ghost to control the stage and rule the play. In this scene, King Lear is overcome with fear as he realizes that the ghost of his wife, Lady Macbeth, has come to kill him. He is overcome by the fear that his wife will kill him as well. He realizes that his fear is not so much that he will die, but that he himself will be killed. He feels that he has no choice but to follow his wife's example and kill her.
