In this chapter, the Underground Man attempts to use a device called the "horadric" to measure the amount of energy emitted by stones. He finds a gem in his garden, but the object is too small to be of any use to him. The Underground Man goes to find it, and finds that the object has been buried in the garden by a "hostile female" about 40 years of age. When he finds the object, he finds that it is a "primitive gem" that he would kick to the side if he were to see it during the day. He wonders how he can put the object in the wall
