About This Chapter
The narrator begins by telling the audience that there are many famous violinists who went on to become famous after starting out in classical music. He says that he doesn't care what people think of him because he's just playing the music the way he thinks it should be played. The narrator then goes on to say that he hates classical music because it makes him feel like a "idiot" . He also says that his friend, the piano player, is a good player, but that's because he lives in the "white urban" world of classical music, which is why he hates it so much. The piano player has to practice all the time, the narrator says, because he is a "delicate as glass . ." The narrator tells the audience about how his friend is going to study at vienna next month, and how he'll be studying every day from morning to night. He's a great player, he says, but he wants to be a conductor someday. He wants to become a conductor so that he can play the music like he likes it, not like he thinks he should. The music is so good that the narrator is glad that he quit playing. Now he can spend more time goofing off with his friends.
