About This Chapter
The orchestra is made up of musicians from different parts of the country, and the conductor, Stresemann, is one of them. The girl who plays the violin reminds us that she's from the same country as the conductor. She's also a big fan of the guy who conducts the orchestra, and she wants to learn from him. She wants to study in Europe, but she can't go to Europe to study music with him because he's teaching in the U.S. She also wants to go to the conducting school in Europe because she'd like to learn music from him, too. She asks the girl if she knows who she is, but the girl says she doesn't, because she overheard the conductor trying to talk to a married woman the day before at a party. She tells the girl that her master is her enemy, and that means that the conductor is also her enemy. The conductor and the girl go off to talk at the Gokon, which is a kind of music hall. The flute girl asks the conductor if he knows her name, and he says he does. She then asks him to transfer her from the conducting course to the music school. He's not feeling well, so he'll conduct the orchestra today.
