The scene opens with a conversation between a piano student and his neighbor. The piano student, who is named Nemo, complains to his neighbor that his electric piano playing makes him ill. He asks his neighbor to accompany him on his violin exam the following week. The neighbor, named nodame, complains that he has to feed the piano student every day. The two of them eat together and play together after they eat a meal. Nemo complains that his piano playing is so good that those who accompany him were "bad" in the past. He says that he and his piano student have a lot of "soul" and that they even play together on the same day. He also says that his mother does not care who accompanies her as long as she is fed.
