About This Chapter
The narrator and his friend, Freddy, arrive at the chateau where they're staying for the evening. Freddy tells Freddy that he's going to have to stay up all night playing the piano, but Freddy doesn't care. He's just going to hang out with the other guests. Freddy asks Freddy if he can borrow money to buy some new clothes. Freddy says he'll have to wait until after the recital to borrow money, because he just bought a weird necklace. Freddy's not sure if the audience will like the new clothes, but he thinks they'll like the old ones anyway. The narrator thanks everyone for coming out to see his recital, and Freddy tells the audience that he hopes they clap so that they can hear the music. Freddy compares the music to Mozart's music, saying that the music is perfect because the music always returns to its original melody, and then another melody enters, then disappears, and so on. Freddy thinks that this is the first time that the audience has heard the music, and he thinks that it reminds him of a woman who can't talk to people easily, even if she tries. Freddy hopes that Freddy will help him with his exams.
