About This Chapter
"El and guossa" The narrator tells the young lady that she's all right, and that she should have dinner with her at her house tonight. He tells her that he misses her grandfather, who was a piano prodigy in China. He also tells her about the piano prodigy, who has lived in the U.S. for the past ten years. The narrator then shows the young woman a recording of the prodigy in Paris last year. She's been living in America since she was ten, and her parents wanted her to follow in the footsteps of her parents. The young woman asks the narrator if she can buy her a ring, and the narrator tells her it's not a ring at all, but rather a gift from a guy who wants to declare his ownership over her. She then tells him that she has a crush on the girl in the ring, but she doesn't know what the ring is like. The two of them eat dinner, and then the narrator goes back to the piano to play a piece for her birthday. He's sad that he didn't get the chance to play before, but he's determined to play again.
