About This Chapter
The piano teacher interrupts to tell the audience that the girl has stopped playing the piece she's been practicing. The teacher is surprised that she hasn't forgotten the piece, because it's so different from the one she was playing before. He thinks that she is playing "improvised" music, which is one of the pieces that's required for the competition. He also thinks that the clown's death was a sad one, because he couldn't get the ballerina to dance with him, but he's happy that he died. He's also surprised that there's no one who's won the competition so far. He asks the piano teacher if he thinks the girl will be able to talk to them after the competition, and the teacher tells him that he can go to Europe with him if he wants to, but that his master's degree is not good enough for her. He says that Europe would be a better place for her, because there are more "odd-tolerant people" there, and he'd like to help her with her studies. He tells the teacher that he doesn't have time to teach him again, and asks if he can ask the girl to stay overnight with him. The girl says that she'll have to go to her family's house to study, so the teacher says that'll be fine, but not for him.
