Kiyora tells her fiance, Chigi, not to go to the opera with him because she wants to see him. She also tells him to come to her hotel and see her. She tells him that she's going to Paris to compete in a music competition. Chigi says that's a good thing, because without music, they wouldn't even have met. He tells her that he won't be able to compete with her because he's not a musician. He also says that he'll be lonely since he won the competition without music. He says that if he weren't a musician, he'd never have met his fiancee. KiYora says that she can't believe how lucky she is to have met her fiance like that. She's also sad that her sister-in-law, tanya, is graduating from high school this year and that her family doesn't have the money to send her to college. Tanya has rented an apartment from another friend of hers who's gone back to Japan for the exam period. She hasn't been able to clean up after herself because she spilled some coffee on the rug. She says that her former teacher and tanya's current teacher are always around to mop the floor after she leaves the house. She asks him if he can help her out with the exam. He's worried about the noise of the competition, but he says that they'll all practice at the school until late at night.
