About This Chapter
The scene opens with a description of the violin concerto, which is said to be the final work of a school composer. It is said that the concerto was written for Manon Gropius, the daughter of the late mahler. She died at the age of nineteen, but it is believed that she died of an unexpected fate. The scene ends with a soliloquy by the young man, in which he says that he wants to return to his heavenly home and bid farewell to the world. He tells the audience that he is graduating from high school this year. He says that everything is riding on the success of the competition, and that he would like to be in the finals. He asks the audience to come back to see him in the theater, but they refuse, saying that they are waiting for him at the theater. The young man tells them that he feels like he has seen the scene somewhere before, and asks them not to wait for him. He then asks them to stop the judging of the final day of the competitions and to begin the results. The head judge, Joel Bats, tells him that he will have a hard time in the next day's competition. The two young men agree that they will play the concerto in the final.
