About This Chapter
In this short scene, the audience is introduced to the main character, geous, a student at Yonsei University. He is studying music with his mother, who is also studying part time, and he is depressed because he does not have enough money for his studies. He tells his mother that he would like to quit school and stay at home and practice, but she advises him not to do so because he is not good enough. He also tells her that she is a demon because she does not know what to do with herself when she is not able to pay her bills. When he asks her why she did not come to the orchestra rehearsal, she replies that she was not serious about her studies and therefore did not want to miss the rehearsal. She also tells him that her hair is very itchy and she cannot stand to wash it with soap and dish soap. When she asks him what he does, he tells her he is studying piano and con- ducting. He asks her if she would like him to stop playing the violins that Yonsei sells because it makes him sell all his other violins. She replies that it is more important to her than her life. She then tells him about her father's contrabass company, which is doing well and that she has improved her bowing.
