We learn that the young men of the Lin clan are all brothers, and that they can put their past troubles behind them. They're going to fight the yanhao, and if they lose, they'll give the zhaos their mine. If they win, they can forget about the fight, and they can go back to fighting the lins. The patriarch tells us that he was once a student of vice-principal Xu, but that he's been expelled from the academy. He asks if he can talk to his master about what's happened, and the patriarch says he'll report back to him. He also tells the patriarch that he heard that steward chen's clan was oppressing the youthfeathers, and he came to see if he could help. He's not sure why liang is here, but he says he heard about it from the patriarch. He tells liang that he came here to tell him the truth, and apologizes for what happened. He says that he saved liang's life when he was in the trial court, and now he wants to apologize and forget about it. He explains that the Lins are holding a tournament in a month's time, in which he will have to fight yan hao. He knows that he can't afford to lose, and so he plans to fight. He reminds himself that he and liang are fellow pupils, so he doesn't want to owe anyone a favor. But the patriarch reminds him that if he ever needs his help, he should say the word.
