Narusegawa and Mutsumi are in a bar in Todai, a town in central Japan, where they have just spent the night. They're having a good time, and they're planning to celebrate the end of the exam the next day. When they get back to the bar, they find that they haven't yet passed the exam, and that they've been drinking too much. They don't know why, but they think it's because of Mutsu, who punched them in the face. They think that Mutsu punched them because he punched him in the mouth, and now he's leaving them all in a bad mood. When he gets back to his room, he tells us that he thinks he can pass the exam but that he doesn't have the word "mutsum" in his vocabulary yet. He's worried because he learned the word when he was on a trip 15 years ago with his parents, and he'd forgotten it now. He thinks that maybe because the exam is coming up, he'll be nervous. He asks if Mutsu is the "promise girl" , and if she's really the one who wants to go to Todai with him. She's not, he says, but she'll have to wait until after the exam.
