This chapter opens with a long monologue by the monster, in which he tries to convince his master that he is not a coward and that the monster is not as bad as he thinks he is. He tells the monster that if he wants to talk trash about him, he should make sure that he does not hear it. He also tells him that he did not kill the monster out of concern for his "rare and powerful soul" and that if the monster survives or leaves, it will be a curse on him. The monster then asks the master how long he is planning to watch, and the master replies that it is time to go and kill the people. The police will be called soon, but the master says that he and the monster will not be coming back to this place again.
