About This Chapter
This chapter's epigraph comes from a poem by a famous poet named Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Longfellow's poem, "What the Hell Is This," is about a creature that frightens hell out of a man. The creature is a mermaid, and the poem describes the creature as "fugly" . The poem also describes the mermaid as a "legendary mermaid" , which makes the creature look like a "lie." The creature explains that if a person sins against another, their heavenly father will forgive that person's sins. If a person does not forgive his or her sins against someone else, the heavenly father's father will not forgive their sins either. He also explains that as long as a person tells God everything through prayer, God will protect his mind and soul . He then asks the creature if he is a materialist, or a "materialist." He explains that salvation is the "way of life" and "the way of truth." He also says that he does not like to use the creature's appearance as an excuse to fight. He feels that the creature is "hitting a tire" and asks the priest if he has ever seen the creature before. The priest replies that he has never seen god before and asks if the mission he got to destroy the place was to "mind his own business." The priest tells the priest that he is too weak to fight the creature. He asks if he was trying to kill the creature, but the priest tells him that the captain gave them an order to not kill anyone. The church has just been attacked and many of its members have been injured, the priest says. He calls for help and tells them to come to him right away
