In this chapter, we are introduced to Mr. Gong, the young master of the house, and his friend, the old woman, and their son, who have come to stay with him. The old woman and her son have been living in China for many years, and they have come back to live at the house because they are afraid of living in a new country. The young master is furious, and he demands that they be expelled from the house. He tells the old man that he is in love with him, and that he should at least let them in the house so that he can be with her. He also tells the young man that it is okay to let in the guests, but not to expect that he will take care of the guests.
