Mr. Steward is in his room, having a bad temper. Miss Shirley tells him that she loves him very much, and that he has done a great deal for her. He has rushed back to the United Kingdom to find her when she went missing, and he has been looking for her everywhere in the storm. He treats her well, and she should remain his mistress for life. Mr. Stewart tells Miss Shirley that he simply wants a home, abandoned by his birth parents, and kicked out by his adoptive ones. He tells her that his brother died unexpectedly in a car crash. He blames himself for the accident, but Miss Shirley knows that he blames his brother for the death of his other brother. She says that he is responsible for taking care of his brother.
