About This Chapter
The piano is brought back to the island, and the three of them play together on it. The grim reaper and his brother have already left, so they need to keep a little death in their enchantment. The island can now be used as a place to go for a walk, and they'll take the piano with them for a tour. The narrator tells us that he's disappointed in the fact that he didn't stay with the grim-rehirer status, but that it was the best gift he ever received. He says that after meeting her, he accepted things he would have never accepted before, and now he thinks that she's more real than he expected. He tells her that if she met a man in university, she should be more confident than she is now. He wants to hold her a bit longer before he leaves, and he wants to find out what's in her notebook. He can hear her hair falling, so he'll break the news to her if she plays the piano. He's worried that big brother blames him for everything, but he doesn't know why. He thinks that death should have killed him, because he was using his eye and his earring to monitor his brother. But now, he says, he deserves it.
