About This Chapter
The narrator wakes up in the middle of the night to find that his wife has woken up and is calling for him again. He's worried that she's a normal person, but he's also worried that he might be a weird person. He wants to know why he hasn't been able to communicate with his wife, and he wants to be sure that she doesn't detect any weird behavior. He also wants to make sure that he'll be able to go back to the hotel if he can't communicate with her. The narrator is worried that the food in the hotel is too expensive, and that the mountain that's appeared in his dreams is nowhere to be found. He is also worried about the fact that the man in the room below isn't a good person, because he is not the kind of person who'd stay in a hotel for three days. He wonders if the man below is a bad person, and then he wonders if it's just a coincidence that he is in the same room with Tod, who's in the other room. He then wonders if Tod and the man above are actually a couple, and if they're actually staying together. He realizes that Tod didn't show up, because the room only had his luggage and he couldn't find any new keys. He tells the narrator to be careful, because Tod is in another room, and the narrator won't hear his words. He asks if there's another person who can use the keys to make you unconscious,
