About This Chapter
This chapter opens with a flashback to a dream in which the two of them are running away together, and the narrator explains that he has come to help. He is shocked to find that the water is electrified, and that the fish he is catching are electric currents, which he uses to catch them. He also realizes that the snake that he saw in the dream is a gentle snake, and he is afraid of it. The narrator then explains that the story of the warriors and the dragons is a story about protecting the treasure of a dragon, but to protect the treasure, the dragon thought of an ingenious way to create a new dragon. The new dragon would look exactly like the old dragon in terms of its looks, personality and memories, and it would hatch an egg, which it would then hatch into a second dragon. This way, it would be able to curse the first dragon forever, and protect the dragon's treasure forever. This is what the narrator calls "eternal immortality," and he feels a "hint of pleasure" in his heart, "warm and tender" . He then changes the name of the dragon to "ole gum" , and wonders why he dreamed of him in this position. He feels that he would have more experience in naming things than he does. He wants to touch the dragon, even though he does not have to. He asks the narrator to tell him what is wrong, and she says that it is best if they both know what is going on. He mutters that he cannot sleep because he is worried so much about
