About This Chapter
In this short scene, we are introduced to the new bride, the beautiful Miss Swan. She is dressed in a beautiful bridal veil and surrounded by fresh flowers. She asks the groom to lift her veil and promise her that she will always love him. The groom asks her if she really wishes to marry him. She replies that she does not wish to get married. He tells her that the wedding will not take place because the bride has told him that she would rather be married in Rome than in Florence. He then asks the bride if she would like to stay with him, and she says that she is not sure if she wants to stay or not. He says that he will take her to be "cleansed" for peace's sake. He asks her why she did not tell him she would not want to be married. She responds that she was lying to him and that she wanted to stay so that she could marry him for peace. He calls her a fool and tells her to hurry up and get out of the way so that he can catch her in the act. He warns her that they are getting closer to the castle and that the castle is under the control of the witches. She says that if the witches caught her, she would be disgraced and would have to act all contrite and try to win sympathy. She thanks the groom for his help, and he tells him that most of the police squad was blown up by the attack. They have entered the area where the moat defense mechanism is set up
