About This Chapter
The narrator explains that pigs are called "pigtails" because they grow easily in the rain and can be used as feed for pigs. He tells the story of how his master used to tease him about being a pig and how he would be happy to just eat and drink and do nothing. The narrator says that he is the only one in the village who remembers seeing his master in the mirror. He explains that everyone else is still refining souls. He says that the reason he woke up was because he picked up his ladle to make a dish and discovered that he could make a machine that would automatically produce good food. Every time he held a tool and looked at it, a voice in his head said, "this is not me" . On the 17th day since he arrived, he remembers who he is and destroys the furnace. Instead of refining souls, everyone is tasked with crafting a new iron furnace every evening of the month. This is just like his master, the narrator says. He sneaks out to investigate and sees that everyone is fighting and tore apart. He wants to make everyone regain consciousness if they can. He begins to research and produce instruments that can help people regain consciousness.
