About This Chapter
In this chapter, Desdemona explains to the reader how she came to be in the Hall of the Gods. She tells the reader that her mother was a "true believer" in the gods, and that she was responsible for her mother's death. She explains that she climbed up to the top of the hall to join the other gods, but that the messenger who tried to kill her wasn't concerned because he didn't want to expose his old grudges to the other men in the hall. He was afraid that if he exposed their dirty deeds, they would be so proud that even the Archbishop wouldn't be able to protect them, so he would have to deal with them the "fatal blow" . He also explains that he had his fortune told by a stone of prophecy, and he also received a silver robe. He had to cross the sea to come to the land of the living. He explains that many people have lost their parents at an early age, and many have to "crawl and fight" to survive. He wants to take revenge on the servants who put him to bed at night, and on the people who haven't lived such a "life"
