About This Chapter
The scene opens with a flashback to the night before, when the two men were shipwrecked. When they returned to the surface, they discovered that they were surrounded by strange creatures, and they were unable to communicate with one another. The men were able to communicate by using a mirror, but they could not communicate with each other because they were separated from each other by a wall of water. The two men tried to communicate verbally, but the mirror was too far away for them to communicate. They had to use their hands to move the mirror, which made it impossible for the men to communicate effectively. They tried to talk to each other, but it was too late. They were separated by the wall, and the men had no way of knowing each other's identities. When the men were reunited, they realized that they had been separated from one another by a barrier of water, and that they could communicate only by using their hands. They began to talk, but their conversation was interrupted by the sound of someone's voice, which they mistook for the voice of a snake. The snake, however, was not a snake, but rather a human being, and so they began to speak in a language similar to the language of the snake. They discovered that the snake's language was similar to that of the human beings, but that the human language was not the same as the language used by the snake
