In this chapter, we are introduced to a number of characters, each of whom is a member of a different social class. One of the characters, named "Jon," is the protagonist of the novel, which is set in a utopia in which people are free to practice their religion and worship as they wish. The protagonist, however, is not allowed to practice his religion because he is a foreigner, and he is forbidden to read books that are considered "banned" by the court.
