Sitting up, Sands explains that his master was his savior. He rescued him and made him a robot arm. His master's name was pan, and his skills came from a mysterious sect in the east. He deepened his knowledge through diligent research. Sands tells him that he has destroyed the furnace, but that the spirits of Pan are fine. He tells Sands that the reason he asked about Pan was to understand the source of his skills. Sands says that if Pan knew of the contents of the notebook, he would drop it. Sands warns him that if the results are correct, there is no cure for the mirror array. He says that he can see murders in Pan's eyes, and that the villagers must be kept alive. Next day, Sands tells his guest that he saw Mr. booth wreck things that were not his own. He warns Sands that destroying the furnace will keep him from lying to the gods again. Sands asks Sands to listen to the results of the night's work
