About This Chapter
In this short scene, Gad's father explains to his son why he's so laid back. He's upset because he thought he was about to die. He thinks that his mother is trying to get rid of the "regional tree" so that she can get to the "central" and take everyone with her. Gad thinks that this would be a good idea, since he'll be able to get to "the central" with the help of the family's old library. He also thinks that becoming a lord is a step in the right direction, since it will give him full control over the region. Gad is confused by this idea. He doesn't understand why his mother would want to kill a tree that's been there for thousands of years. He wonders if she's just trying to kill as many people as possible so that no one will die. Gad tries to think of a shortcut, but he can't figure out how to get out of the region without using magic. He realizes that the only way to get away from the region is to use magic, which is like using a shortcut to go long distances. But he'd rather use magic than use a shortcut. He suggests that they look for a "standard method" instead of using magic, since they don't really know where they're supposed to be
