In this chapter, we learn that the piece of staff that was found near alt's bed was a piece of her staff, and that it was used to cast a spell that would lead to the location of her killer. In order to use the spell, one would need to follow the staff as it led the way, but since they can't, they'll split into three teams to find the exact location. They'll have to wait for the spell to last for 72 hours, which means that they have 9 hours until the time of the incident. The magic will last for 24 hours, assuming that the incident was between midnight and 5am, based on the time at which alt lived. In other words, if the time was between 12pm and 3am, the time would be between 3:08pm and 3:50pm. The three men patrol the area looking for the killer, but they're too tired to do so. They wonder who built the hideout, and if they could change anything to make it easier for them to get there.
