In this chapter, we learn that the Tree of Knowledge is considered to be an absolute existence, but that it can only reach out to organisms that are born of it. In other words, it is impossible for the Tree to predict what will happen in the future. When the people of the western region left, the Tree was able to sever the connection between them, but not because it was afraid of losing its power. Instead, it was hoping that the people would find a way to survive without it. The Tree found a sorcerer who could communicate with the Tree and say that if he left the gate open it might lead to a new way of survival. This is the Tree's hope, and despair.
