About This Chapter
"Cactus" is the title of this short scene, which takes place in Baltimore, Maryland, on May 14, 1987. It is set in the late nineteenth century, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. It is a short scene in which a young man named "Ginny" is talking to his friend "Elliot," who is a prostitute. Elliot tells him that his friend, "Marisol," is serving a life term in prison for "peculiar sin" and that she is being held in solitary confinement for "fucking up a chick's cock . . " He tells her that he has a doctor who will prescribe drugs for her, and that he is not leaving his wife, who has been shot and killed by her husband. He asks her to come with him to his sister's house, where he will show her the place where the drugs are stored and where they are being sold. He wants her to show him where they can get some of the drugs, and then they can leave. He tells his friend that he does not think he should go to school because his girlfriend will turn into a "criminal" and "get herself into a criminal" . He is not going to be driving around with the drugs in the car, he says, but he does want to know what is going on with his friend. He calls for a cab, but the driver refuses to take him, saying that he cannot handle the situation any longer. He says that he will ask his sister to meet him at her house.
