About This Chapter
"The Future's Uncertain and the End's Always Near" The narrator tells us that the future is always uncertain, and that the end will always be near "the look of love" . In this chapter, we're introduced to a new character, a woman named "Janice." She's the kind of girl you'd expect to find in a romance novel. We learn that she's from a small town in the Carolinas, and she and her lover, Frank, have been hanging out together. Frank tells the police officer that Frank's father fought in the "Korean conflict" , and Frank says that he's sure that Harry killed thousands of men there. Frank asks the officer to get out of the car so he can tell Harry what's going on. He's worried that Harry might kill him, but the officer reassures him that Harry was looking in the trunk. Frank then tells the officer that Harry's wife, "Jace," is in the car with him, and they're going to have to leave soon. He says that Harry should have known about the whole thing, because he was supposed to be preaching the gospel to the people in the area. Frank is worried that the people will laugh at him for being such a good guy, but he assures him that they won't.
