About This Chapter
"I'll catch your asses in here again" , the narrator tells Carlos. He's got a message for him: he's going to "beat your fucking asses halfway to death" . Carlos, of course, doesn't want to hear that. He tells the narrator that he and Rodney used to go to school together, and that Rodney was a good kid. He says that if a man has nothing to lose, he'll still be able to make a good life for himself. He also says that he married Rodney in order to get away from the vices of the world. Rodney says that's fine, but he'd rather have sex with an American woman than a Mexican woman. The narrator says that, yes, Rodney is a good guy, but that he has nothing else to live for. He goes on to say that, even if he had nothing, he wouldn't have been able to get married in the first place. He adds that if he married in another country, he would have to live in Mexico. He wants to know who Carlos is, and the narrator says, "Hey, who's looking for you at this place?" . He asks if Carlos has a room number, and Carlos says he does, and then he says that the place is a "motel" and that there's a "room number" in the room. He then says that Carlos's name is "Rise and shine" and the room number is "8b." He says he heard about "old ladies like that" before, and he thinks this is "a failure to communicate." Carlos tells him that his dad is "soft and squishy inside," and that he loves Rodney. He claims that he can't imagine why Rodney would want to see his dad,
