About This Chapter
"Sweet Jane" In this chapter, we meet Jane, a young woman who has just returned from a visit with her aunt. Jane is worried about her cousin, Michael, who has a serious limp. Jane tells her aunt that she's going to stay with Michael's family for a week, and she asks Jane not to call on her. Jane says she'll take care of Michael and his family, and then she tells Jane that her niece, virginia, is the nicest girl in Worcester County, and that she should take her to see the boardwalk. Jane's aunt doesn't want to take virginia to the boardwalk, but Jane says it's a good idea, since it'll get her sister to school on time. Jane then tells her that her cousin's friend, Damis, is a "real douchebag," and that he hit his girlfriend, Jane, while she was on a water slide. Jane thinks that Damis's girlfriend is pretty, but she says that he's just a "douchebag" and that there's no way that a girl like Jane would stay with a man like Damis. Jane asks her aunt why she hasn't asked her aunt about the death of Michael, and Jane says that she needs to wake up and tell her something. Jane promises to help her.
