About This Chapter
The narrator tells us that he's been in the sixth grade for a while now. He's got a fight with a kid who lives near him, and he doesn't know who the kid is. He tells the narrator that he is in the duck-and-cover group of jocks and the burnouts, and that their leader is Jesse Barret. He says that since they are in groups, they're more likely to pick on other people. He also says that the teachers don't call his parents, and the nurse is "bad enough" . The narrator says that he wants to go to the pep rally, but he'll have to wait for his mom to pick him up. He asks if he can meet up with Larry's baseball team. Larry is a freshman, so the two of them can get to know each other better. The principal warned him that if he got into trouble, he'd have to call his mom, but the narrator says he'm not going to let that happen. He thinks that maybe they shouldn't get into trouble in the first place, since their existence isn't threatened. He wonders what the new girl at school is like. She's "in an insane asylum" , he says, and she knocked on his door the other night. He is a friend of hers.
