The next morning, the detective finds angelica and the monroe woman in a hotel room. He tells her that her husband has hired him to keep an eye on her, and that she has paid him handsomely for the room. The detective wonders why his wife is so upset about her affair with a man named "Monk" . He wonders why her husband doesn't want his wife to be unfaithful. He also wonders why the police have tipped him off about his wife's affair with the monk. The monk's wife arrives at the hotel at 4pm, and the detective goes to talk to her. When he returns, he finds that his assistant, "dick jones," has come for a visit, and he is shocked to find that the beard on the man's head is fake. He goes back to work, and when he sees "the black eyes" on his assistant's face, he is sure that he has blown the opportunity to blackmail his assistant. He watches the tape of the monk and the woman cutting a cake together, and realizes that the two of them are in love. He asks his assistant if he can write her a will, and she says that she can't, because "my poor baby there" did everything he could to separate them apart, even after the couple was married. He then asks her if she is his wife, and her answer is that she is, but that she isn't his wife.
