About This Chapter
"Little Love Tragedy" The narrator tells us that sometimes he thinks about his wife's death. Sometimes, he thinks, she might have gotten cancer, or been shot by some crazy person. Sometimes he thinks that she might be murdered, or raped, or even raped herself. He says that before they moved to New York, he couldn't imagine people like that. Now, he says, he's starting to think that maybe she'll die before he can say anything. The narrator says that last week, he was driving into a mall and the jerk in front of him didn't even glance at him. He thinks that if he had said anything to him, he would have been shot or killed. He's not sure if he'll ever understand people like this, but he says that he can't believe that people would do such a thing to a pretty girl. He tells the narrator to cough up a little cough and to get his wife some thank yous. They're booked for dinner the next week, and the narrator says he doesn't want to hurt his wife. He asks if they can have some of her blueberry pie, and she says they can. She likes ice cream, banana cream, and cherry honey. She says they'll have ice cream and banana cream next week. She tells him that they've been booked all the way through the week for dinner, and that she's booked to stay with them all the time. She asks him if he can talk to her one-on-one, and he says he can, but that he'd have to lower his voice if he wanted to speak to her that way. He complains that he was having a conversation with the other honey, and now he can only talk to him by lower voice. He wants to thank them for their kindness, but they don't have coffee, so he asks them to eat some of his blueberry pie. They say they're planning to have dinner next week and that they need coffee, too. They tell him that he shouldn't worry about it, because he and his wife are in good hands. He goes on to say that he feels stupid for letting this happen to him and that he never thought he would let it happen to his wife, but lately, he
