About This Chapter
The Chorus sings a song about how life is a waste of time. It's about time for the play to start, and the Chorus is worried about the play's star, Hiroshi Sawa, who has just passed out. He's been working at a school where he used to work, and he's had a stroke before. The Chorus says he'll check on Hiroshi at the hospital, but he doesn't want to scare the audience by bringing up the subject of death. He wants to live, he says, and wants to perform the play. He also wants to know if Hiroshi is alive or dead. He wonders when the play will start, since he heard that Hiroshi got really sick and passed out before the play started. He says the drama club didn't have the money to do a play at this time, so they decided to perform a musical instead. He thanks everyone for their support, and says he hopes Hiroshi will live. He tells the Chorus to enjoy themselves to the end, since the time has come for the show to start. He sings the song, "showo foo," which means, "when I don't feel any point in the world . . I live a point less wasted of time" . He compares life to a game of cards, which is like a lottery, except it's won and lost. He feels like life is not worth the pain, but now he realizes that life is worth it. He wishes he could sing the song to Hiroshi, so he can show him how much he loves him. He admits that he wasn't "cut out" to be the star of the play, but at the same time, he was glad that the play turned out the way it did. He asks the Chorus if he was worried about his heart condition, since they gave him an "i.v." .
