About This Chapter
The chapter opens with the narrator remembering how he left school that day. He's lost track of time, and he can't figure out how he got there. He remembers that he once hated the student president, who didn't attend school, fought with other students, and messed up with girls. The student president was a hooligan, he says, and that's why the narrator hated him for three years. He tells the narrator that he was scared of him when he first met him, because he was afraid that he would get into trouble if he touched him. The narrator says that he's now in the rebellious phase of his life, so he doesn't have to constantly think of the student-president. He thinks that they're the "dangerous and charming villains" of the book. He asks his friend if his father wants him to get married, and the narrator replies that he isn't sure if anyone would think that his partner is "that kind of special type" . He says that if he had to go back to school and tell himself that he could be with the person he hated, he'd be happy. He also says that, objectively, he thinks that the man is more suited for someone who plays the piano.
