When the narrator arrives at the mansion, he is greeted by his wife, who tells him that she is waiting for him. He tells her to leave her emotions behind and not to worry about him, for he is just trying to please someone else. She tells him not to forget his purpose, for she still denies that he is her husband. The guests arrive, and the narrator is surprised to see that they are all famous people. He asks if they misunderstood the invitation he sent to the Clarence family. The family runs breweries and construction businesses. Miss clarence tells the narrator that she will be at the banquet, and that she and her husband will discuss the matter after the banquet is over. The narrator is shocked to learn that the woman he thought was his wife is actually his assistant and translator. He wonders why he has another woman by his side, and wonders if she sees him as a rival
